In the eighth grade, I had been given an assignment to determine what I wanted to do with my life and give a report. After receiving that assignment, I went to the emergency room for a hand fracture. The ER physician, also my uncle, set my hand. I was amazed by how the pain stopped so quickly once the fracture was set. It was then that I decided I would become a physician. Being a doctor gives me the opportunity to help people, to give them hope. I am here when they need someone to listen to them. I’m able to give them new ideas on how to deal with their health concerns, including those that seem complicated or challenging or that need a fresh perspective. I also feel blessed to practice family medicine, which gives me the ability to approach each patient’s health with an informed perspective and direct involvement in their health history. Knowing my patients is important to the quality of their care… and one of the great joys in my life. I became a physician because I wanted to make a difference. For me, this means striving always to provide the highest quality of care and the most focused, personalized and compassionate attention I would want for my own family.

As the son of a physician, I’ve known since the age of five that I wanted to be a doctor. I watched my father carefully and saw the contribution he made in the lives of others, and I knew that it was what I wanted to do with my life. It was a direct path for me: After medical school, I returned here for my residency and then teamed up with my father to carry on our family vision of providing advanced, comprehensive care delivered with uncommon compassion and dedication.

My goal as a family physician is for patients to know that they will always be able to share their stories with us so we can provide the best, most appropriate and effective care. I look at you as a whole person, and this governs my approach as both a fellow human and a solution-minded physician. I am here to help with patient’s medical challenges and bring better healthcare — and health — to our community. In my experience, this starts with being genuinely interested in and devoted to the patients in my care.

An important part of our tradition of excellence is that we treat everyone with the concern and respect they are due. We are a family that is dedicated to taking care of families. This is why I am committed to your best interests, to providing advanced, comprehensive care and to respecting your time, sensibilities and unique needs.

Although medicine is the “family business,” my first career centered around developing robotic and automated systems as a mechanical engineer. While I enjoyed my work, I found myself missing the human element. When I made the transition to medicine, I discovered the most complex and amazing systems I had ever worked with, the human body. The human body has a strong resilience and unlike my previous robots, with proper diet, exercise and sometimes the right medications or procedures, the body can recover and become even better – this is what I look most forward to being involved with.

I enjoy that my career affords me the opportunity to form relationships with the wonderful people of our community as we partner to improve their overall health and wellness. I enjoy working with patients with chronic health conditions to provide them with the best opportunity to live their life and fulfill their dreams. And I particularly enjoy working with patients older than I am who, in exchange for my medical insight, share with me their wisdom and life lessons.

Even though I am joining my father and brother, the sense of family extends beyond my immediate family to the other providers and staff making our offices a wonderful place to spend the day.

Karen Kirwan, FNP-C | Forest Grove/Hillsboro

Certified Family Nurse Practitioner: American Nurses Credentialing Center

MS: Nursing, University of California Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA

BS: Nursing, Mount St. Mary’s College, Los Angeles, CA

Healthcare Focus: Family Medicine

One of the main motivators for me to become a nurse practitioner was the desire to prevent patients from being hospitalized. Being a ‘physician extender’ enables me to be more directly involved in patient care, spending as much time as is needed to empower patients to take charge of their care and their health. After more than two decades, I’ve learned that top-quality family medicine starts with listening well and committing the time to get patients motivated and involved in their best health.

I have been a primary care PA for over 10 years. I love seeing a variety of patients, but I especially enjoy caring for women and those with mental health concerns. To help meet our community’s need for mental health services, I’m currently pursuing a Doctor of Medical Science degree with an emphasis in Psychiatry. My medical practice is a safe space and welcoming of everyone. My goal is to meet each patient with compassion and understanding wherever they are in their journey. I’m an expert in medicine, but I wholeheartedly believe patients are the experts of their own bodies and lives. I’m LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, non-binary, and Health at Every Size aware and affirming. I’m also body positive and provide secular, trauma informed care. In my free time I enjoy backpacking, crafting, reading, spending time with my partner and our chickens, and traveling. I love living in the pacific northwest and feel lucky to have the mountains, ocean, and desert at our fingertips! Thanks for taking the time to get to know me and I look forward to serving you.

Certified Physician Assistant: National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants

MS: Physician Assistant Studies, Pacific University, Hillsboro, OR

BS: Biology/Mathematics, Colby College, Waterville, ME

Healthcare Focus: Family Medicine

The complexities of the human body fascinate me, and were one reason for my pursuing a career as a Physician Assistant. I continually educate myself about the human body and pass this knowledge on to patients. I believe this assists them in better understanding their health and the goals we set forth for them. I enjoy developing relationships with patients and their families, and believe that this aids in the process of incorporating healthy living into their lives. There is nothing more fulfilling to me than encouraging patients to meet their health goals and watching them succeed.

MS: Physician Assistant Studies, Pacific University, Hillsboro, OR

I was intrigued about the career of a Physician Assistant from an early age. As I learned more about how the duties so closely resembled my passion of helping people, I knew it was what I wanted to do. I practice evidence-based medicine and apply a holistic approach to caring for my patients. I appreciate the patient-provider relationship and do my best to educate patients on their bodies and their health in order to make the best healthcare decisions together. It is a privilege and a pleasure to be a part of people’s lives and to advocate for them.

Certified Physician Assistant: National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants

DMSc: Doctorate of Medical Sciences, Pacific University, Hillsboro, OR

MS: Physician Assistant Studies, Pacific University, Hillsboro, OR

BS: Aeronautics, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach, FL

Healthcare Focus: Family Medicine

I decided to become a Physicians Assistant so that I could expand access to care and provide quality medical care for those in my own community. I found great meaning in practicing tactical combat casualty care and having opportunities to help indigenous persons receive medical care that they otherwise would not have access to. I want to help my patients improve their quality of life by discovering and addressing what is important to each patient in regards to their health. I take a “whole person” approach to practicing medicine; considering how medical conditions affect the whole of the patient’s life as well as how the whole of the patient’s life affects their medical conditions. My patients can always count on me to have their best interest, I am supportive of a variety of alternative medicine practices when they can be safely integrated. In my spare time I enjoy playing unicorns or puppies with my daughter and Lego or board games with my son. I also thoroughly enjoy the outdoors and love to go hiking any chance I get.
